I'm going to need some help setting up on Fri. and also
publiciszing the HWA screening on Sunday. I also need a
flyer for the HWA screening on Sunday, done ASAP. I'm
working on the Oct. 21 flyer. Can I get some help?

I need everyong who is reading to email me or call me
with their email address and phone #. Please state the
DATE your'e reading.

We'll need decorations for the event on Fri. I have three
events this weekend and a whole week of work, so if
someone could put together a flyer for our Oct. 15th
screening and post it EVERYWHERE i'd be really
grateful.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 15, from 7pm-9pm at The Chaplin Theater of Raleigh Studios

The Horror Writers Association Los Angeles/Orange County Chapter presents:

A FREE screening of The Yellow Sign and Call of Cthulhu (made by the HP Lovecraft Historical Society)

Afterwards, there will be a Q&A with directors Aaron Vanek (me) and Andrew Leman (Call of Cthulhu) afterwards, talking about adapting literary works to the screen.

Where?
Raleigh Studios 5300 Melrose Avenue (across the street from Paramount Studios) Los Angeles, CA 90038

Map
Guests should enter through the Van Ness gate
They can park in the structure on the EAST side of Van Ness Ave., just south of Melrose for $5 or, free street parking is available if they want to search for a spot
(it can get busy around there).
YOU CANNOT PARK DIRECTLY ON THE RALEIGH STUDIOS LOT-- DO NOT TRY TO DRIVE ON TO THE LOT

Guests should then walk through the pedestrian gate at Van Ness. Tell them you are going to a screening at the Chaplin Theater. They will direct you, but here are some directions anyways:

Go through the gate, walk straight ahead towards the sound stage wall. When
you are just about to hit the wall, turn left, and you will pass through a gate and down a small hill. Once clear of the building, turn right, and you will be walking towards the cafe. There are double doors just to your right, enter there, and go upstairs (stairs right in front of you). The Chaplin is now behind you. If the screening has started, there will be a red light on outside. If you open the door, you will be in the front of the theater, and
everyone can see who arrived late and disrupted the screening.

PLEASE, NO FOOD OR DRINK INSIDE THE THEATER!

PHONE DON’T EMAIL, call Denise: (310) 371-0274

Please let me know ASAP if you want to read fiction or poetry and sell/sign books screen/sell/sign short films at one or both of the following. Please read the descriptions of the area and the individual venues. PLEASE NOTE that I need to give Ron at Acres of Books the names of readers RIGHT AWAY for the Friday the 13th event so he can send out his press release:

Friday the Thirteenth of October at 7:00pm:
Acres of Books
240 Long Beach Blvd.
Long Beach, CA
(562) 437-6980
In the Music Room
Poetry and Fiction Reading by authors from HWA and SFPA

Saturday the Twenty-First of October at 6:00pm:
Garden of Pan
510 E. Broadway
Long Beach, CA
(562) 435-8522
Poetry and Fiction Reading and Short Film Screening by members of HWA and SFPA

General info: Long Beach is the second-largest city in L.A. County with a thriving arts colony, literary and music tradition. The city turns out for Halloween in a BIG way. Counter culture is mainstream here; there are large numbers of goth, pagan, and gay/lesbian citizens in Long Beach. What you won’t find is peasants with torches—literature in all its forms is appreciated and there is no resistance to horror, dark fantasy, or edgy film and literature.

Bertrand Smith’s Acres of Books is one of the last survivors of Long Beach’s once thriving used-book business. A force of nature itself, you will get lost in the amazing variety and scope of the books they carry. We will be reading in the Music Room, where poetry readings and concerts are held regularly, and which was in the 1940’s a Western Bar! Ron, the organizer of the events, is a great supporter of poetry and literature and some of the events I’ve seen here are awesome! Don’t be afraid to pull out all the stops for this reading. I need to know IMMEDIATELY if you can read since Ron is sending out the press release NOW.

The Garden of Pan is not just another coffeehouse. Located in Long
Beach’s thriving Arts District (where a trendy loft can cost you $800,000!), this place is a dark fantasy fan’s dream. The walls are painted with murals of Pan and other mythological beings; the effect is that of a supernatural grotto. This is not all fluffy fantasy—remember that the work “panic” comes from Pan; there is definitely a dark sensibility underlying the fun here.

When I first visited the place, they were screening the Bela Lugosi
film White Zombie and I felt right at home. We need at least one short film to screen here as well as poets and fiction writers to read. Poetry, music, and drumming circles are all celebrated here on a regular basis.

Let me know if you want to read. We need at least one person to screen a film at the Garden of Pan, also. You will be allowed to SELL AND SIGN books and films at BOTH venues.

Wednesday, September 27
Our monthly meeting will take place on Saturday, September 30, at 3 PM
at The Garden of Pan, 510 E. Broadway, Long Beach, (562) 435-8522. Members
can see the space and also the Music Room at Acres of Books to see where we
can possibly do a reading/book signing/screening. This is the weekend of
the Art Walk so there will be plenty to do in Long Beach. Why not plan to stay
awhile and make it an evening? Cat has also suggested we go to the Queen Mary for drinks; I'm not sure how affordable that would be due to parking $$ at the Queen Mary but maybe she could look into it for us. Parking is metered on the street by The Garden of Pan and if you want to walk and get free parking then park in the partking lot of Acres of Books located on Third Street at the corner of Long Beach Boulevard (but make sure you
actually shop at Acres if you do so!). I will have notes available for members at the meeting stating what the big New York editors I met with this summer are looking for.

I have only heard from one person regarding doing a poetry or fiction reading and book signing in October in Long Beach so if more HWA members do not participate I will have to open it up to other groups. Any HWA members who would like to participate in a Long Beach area reading in October please contact me. I am opening this up right now to other HWA members who are not in our LA/OC Chapter and am inviting SFV Chapter members with this email.

And for some REALLY EXCITING INFORMATION see below! We did it! We got a free screening with the directors of two horror literature-based independent films. There will be a talk about the stories the films were adapted from and a Q&A with the directors. See Aaron's announcement below. Please note we are giving HWA members priority at this screening, but get there early just in case.

Monday, September 18

Hello everyone,

Aaron Vanek is putting together a screening for us in October at Raleigh Studios. This will be a FREE screening for our group of two independent horror films, one based on "the Call of Cthulhu" by Lovecraft, the other on Robert Chambers' story "The Yellow Sign." I will have a date for you on this by Wednesday of this week.

Now, I am also setting up at least one reading/signing for the writers of fiction and poetry in the group for October. I haven't heard from anyone regarding this. Surely someone wants to read their work and possibly sell some books? I'll need to know right away if there are any HWA members who want to do a horror-themed reading/signing for October. If not, I will instead offer the reading to others in the area. But for now, if HWA members would contact me right away I can get this done.

Our meeting for this month will be on Sept. 30 in Long Beach. Time/Location TBA.

I must get any signings/readings booked immediately. Please reply directly to me BY PHONE: (310) 371-0274.

Horror Express Press has released a new illustrated chapbook written by Los Angeles author Christian Avery Bryant and illustrated by the brilliant UK horror artist David Anthony Magitis.

http://www.horrorexpress.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/chapbooks.html

Synopsis: Driven by equally troubled pasts, a rapist and his victim Corrine travel together on a road to redemption in a tale of ultimate revenge where roles are reversed, and the secret of Human strife is revealed: there are no boundaries to the brutality that drives the Human sex drive. Whether she harbors that nagging impulse too is yet to be seen. Can a woman rape? Her assailant will learn soon enough deep in the bowels of a sinister Hollywood bondage club.

Buy it today while supplies last.

Also, see the first 6 intense issues of The Horror Express, including interviews with Neil Gaiman and Clive Barker, and stories by famed horror authors like Graham Masterton and Storm Constantine.

Hello Everyone,

A rather long message this time...first of all, if you get two of these
notices, blame me. If this is the first HWA message you've gotten in
awhile
and you'd like to be on our regular mailing list, please email our
webmaster, Stephen Kilgo, at
manfromblog@yahoo.com.

This month we're meeting at 4 PM at the Creative City Cafe, 7310 Santa
Monica Blvd., West Hollywood (323) 851-1316.

Our topic for this month will be Agents: When you need one, and when
you
don't! I'll be giving the presentation as I am an agent with the Ashley
Grayson Literary Agency. You might be surprised to learn, for example,
in
what situations you DON'T need an agent to represent you.

Also, if you have a new book, film, story, poem, or anything else
horror-related currently in publication, bring it with you. I want us
to
work on PR for our group and the first step is blowing your own horn.

In the same vein (ahem) we need content for our website--pictures,
text,
links to your own home pages. Again, Stephen Kilgo is the person to go
to:
manfromblog@yahoo.com.

Bring your own ideas for next month's meeting. Should we invite a
speaker?
Arrange a reading? Work on some other project together? Get drunk,
fight,
and cry? You tell me.

I hope for a good turnout this time--we really need to revitalize our
group
and use it to provide opportunities for our members. This month we are
meeting at the Creative City Cafe--where should we meet next month?

I've set aside July 29th for the meeting after this one, so please send
suggestions directly to me: Denise Dumars, eerieaerie@hotmail.com,
(310)
371-0274. Please don't miss our June meeting! We need you!

Again, here's the info:
June meeting:
Saturday, June 24, 4 PM
Creative City Cafe
7310 Santa Monica Blvd.
West Hollywood, CA (323) 851-1316
ample free parking, continental snacks, coffee drinks--and I am assured
there are places that sell alcohol within walking distance!

July meeting:
Saturday, July 29
Time & place TBA

Please forward this email to anyone you think would be interested.
Non-members are invited but of course we hope to sign up new members as
we
always need new blood...please somebody help me with some new jokes...

See ya Saturday,
Denise Dumars
HWA LA/OC Organizer
